Margarido Drive, Oakland + Jason Kaldis Architect + Habel Construction

Arana painted the kitchen of this historically-significant home in upper Rockridge: The Morse House. That same year, this kitchen, remodeled by architect Jason Kaldis with Habel Construction, was featured in the Rockridge Home Tour — and reviewed in the San Francisco Chronicle by Sophia Markoulakis. She wrote:

One kitchen that was brought back to its original glory, but with the enhancement of select 21st century conveniences, is the Morse House, a Tudor listed on Oakland’s historical registry.

The kitchen showcases how a traditional home can be modernized while keeping its authentic bones intact. At the request of the homeowners, architect Jason Kaldis kept the historic arrangement of the kitchen, laundry and butler’s pantry.

“To preserve the period mood, no recessed lights were used,” says Kaldis. “We used strip LED fixtures at the under-cabinet locations, in cabinet lighting, and pendants over the butler’s and kitchen sinks. As a result, the house still feels old.”

Sticking to the original footprint kept a central island, a popular feature in today’s kitchen remodels, out of the kitchen. “The homeowners wanted guests to enjoy other parts of the house and maintain the kitchen as a workspace, not a gathering and entertaining spot,” veteran tour volunteer Leonora Sea says.

Instead, the three rooms flow seamlessly by using the same lighting fixtures, Caesarstone London Grey countertop and Carrara marble tiles in both the kitchen and butler’s pantry, and the same hardwood finish throughout the upper living spaces that interact with the kitchen. “They were interested in materials that would not go off trend, but would hold up well,” Kladis says.

McCreary-Greer House, Durant Avenue, Berkeley + Berkeley Architectural Historical Society

Arana is honored to have helped to restore and protect the exterior of this exquisite historic Berkeley city landmark home, which is also home to the offices of the Berkeley Architectural Historical Society (BAHA).

From the BAHA website:

The McCreary-Greer House is an outstanding example of turn-of-the-century Classic Revival style and a City of Berkeley Landmark. Although we refer to the house as the McCreary-Greer House, and the McCreary family did occupy it from 1907 to 1981, they were not the first owners. The house’s origins have been shrouded in mystery, and there are conflicting stories about its construction. From existing records it can be concluded that the house was built in 1901, three years earlier than the commonly assumed date of 1904. However, the house may have been designed as early as 1896 by the architect and builder Cornelius Sarsfield McNally, and it was built for either Ada and Abner Lowell or Marie and Frederick Bateman (of the Bateman Tract). Protecting and beautifying homes for our clients is what we love to do! This project is a repeat client, who called us in to perform necessary and aesthetic updates to her new home!

We coated the wood shingles with a flame retardant and wood preservation product that goes on clear, as well as repairing the front door frame and balcony details, applying varnish to the doors, and painting all of the railings on the multi-level decking plus the window and door frames.

The client picked the colors, including this amazing burgundy, which just makes the whole facade sing!

Trinity Avenue, Kensington + HDR Remodeling

This utterly charming bathroom remodel was part of an extensive lower-level home renovation/living space addition, performed by HDR Remodeling.

We painted the walls and ceiling, and contributed extensive stain and protection work to the wood window, door, and door frame, with careful attention to matching the existing vintage wood-stain finishes throughout the Arts-and-Crafts-era home.

Another gorgeous collaboration with HDR Remodeling!

We love the period-appropriate white paint selection. And check out the beautiful, vintage-looking glass pendant lights in the kitchen! The fireplace gets a makeover as well, keeping the brick detail while giving it a glow-up.
